Spend an Evening Under the Stars with the North Carolina Symphony

One of my favorite annual Outer Banks events is the Evening Under the Stars with the North Carolina Symphony at the Outdoor Pavilion at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo. It's a great way to kick off the summer season and hear some great music. It's festival seating, so bring lawn chairs or blankets. Have dinner at one of the Outer Banks great restaurants on your way to the show or pack a picnic to enjoy at the park.

The setting at Festival Park is a great place to relax and enjoy the concert. The event is free and open to the public. This year's concert is June 5th at 8:00 p.m. In case of rain, the event will be held at the Wright Brother's National Memorial.

May is Condominium Month: Admiral's View

The Admiral's View Condominiums are oceanfront on a beautiful stretch of beach at Milepost 14.7 on the Beach Road in Nags Head. Admiral's View offers a community pool, which is open Mid-April - Mid-October, covered decks and an elevator has been added this year!

Shopping opportunities abound with Outer Banks Mall close by, along with the Cotton Gin, Jockey's Ridge Crossing and Tanger Outlet Mall. You can buy some fresh seafood at Austin Fish Company and enjoy it on the deck! For the adventure minded check out Jockey's Ridge State Park, or maybe windsurfing and kite surfing or jet skiing at Kitty Hawk Kites Kiteboarding Center. Jurassic Putt and Go-Karts are also right there!

An eclectic mix of restaurants are nearby. Jockey's Ribs, La Fogata, China King, Grits Grill, Taiko Japanese Restaurant, Owen's, Windmill Point, Miller's Waterfront Restaurant and Penguin Isle. For a special breakfast, pick up a bag of bagels at New York Bagels in the Outer Banks Mall, or some coffee and goodies from Majik Beans at Surfside Plaza.

Manteo Landmark Christmas Shop Reopens

Have you ever had a change in plans? Well that's what to Edward Greene and Richard Lacerre, owners of The Christmas Shop and Island Art Gallery in Manteo. The store was a popular attraction from 1967 until just over two years ago when the stock was sold or auctioned off.

The building was put up for sale, but there were no offers, so Greene and Lacerre decided to reopen The Christmas Shop. The store will still feature Christmas ornaments and decorations, art work, jewelry and gifts, but a new feature will be a collection of antiques stores.

The Christmas Shop opened yesterday, to a crowd that was eager to once again experience the "sparkle" of such a memorable and special place. When you are in Manteo, do stop by and say hello.

The Yachtsman is a cozy condominium! Sea Whip

The colorful sea whip is a delicate treasure that can be found on the beaches after a hard blow. The sea whip is a gorgonian, or soft coral, that grows in shallow water and on hard bottom substrate. While most sea whips found on Outer Banks beaches are orange, sea whips (which are related to the sea fan) can be purple, red or yellow.

Sea whips range in warm water seas from Brazil to Chesapeake Bay and normally grow from 6 - 24 inches. Over 500 species of gorgonians can be found world wide.

11th Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show

One of the area's most popular art exhibits, the Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show opens May 4th at the art gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo. This show is made up of entries by Dare County artists and features mediums as diverse as the artists themselves. Paintings, drawings, sculpture, fiber, metal and ceramics will all be on display.

The opening reception is Sunday May 4th from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The exhibit will remain open for viewing Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. until May 27. The show is named and held in memory of Mollie Fearing, a local business and community leader and patron of the arts.

This month we'll take a look at one option for your beach vacation- renting a condominium. They are an excellent choice for small families and couples. Larger groups often rent multiple units in one complex so they can be close by one another, while still having the privacy that is sometimes lost when multiple generations stay in one large rental home.

Just as the Outer Banks start to "green up" this time of year, a very special seasonal visitor makes its return. The Great Crested Flycatcher, Myiarchus crinitus, shows up at the end of April or beginning of May and can be distinguished by their olive colored head and back side, crested head and yellow belly. They have a distinctive cry of WEEP, WEEP, and they are often heard before they are seen.

The Great Crested Flycatcher feeds mainly on flying insects, and is a joy to watch as they deftly swoop about catching their prey. Their diet is supplemented by wild fruits and berries. They'll stay in the area until mid-September.
