Kidsfest in Manteo this Friday

The Children & Youth Partnership for Dare County sponsor this FREE child-friendly event every May to promote learning and fun. This event is especially suited for those ages 5 and under. Kids can enjoy face-painting, story time, play corn hole or mini golf, climb on a fire truck, eat ice cream, listen to live music and so much more. Mustang Spring Jam in Corolla

This past fall, Mike Dianna of the Grill Room in Corolla organized the Mustang Music Festival, an all-day festival to benefit the Corolla Wild Horses. I attended and had an absolute blast! The music was top-notch, the food vendors were great, and even the t-shirts they sold were really cool. The community support behind the festival was so great that Mike decided to do it all again.

On Sunday May 20th, head up to Corolla for the Mustang Spring Jam. This event goes from 2-10PM with an amazing line-up of five bands and headliner The Tom Principato band. Gates open at 1PM. Tickets are just $10, and kids are FREE. Don't miss this chance to rock out all day to great tunes... and all to support the Corolla Wild Horses!

Outer Banks Spring Festival of Arts & Crafts

The Outer Banks Women's Club is sponsoring the Outer Banks Spring Festival of Arts & Crafts at the Baum Center on Mustian Street in Kill Devil Hills Saturday and Sunday, May 26 - 27. Artists, wood carvers and crafters will be present with their works on display.

The admission is only $1, and proceeds benefit Club Scholarships and community needs. This is a great place to purchase a locally made piece from a local artist, all while benefiting the community! Bodie Island Lighthouse Under Construction

The beautiful Bodie Island Lighthouse has begun the second phase of its restoration, which should last from now until sometime in 2013. The first phase of construction came to a halt in 2011 when structural integrity issues were uncovered. The National Park Service had to put the entire project on hold until more funding was given.

United Builders group out of New Bern, NC, has taken on the task of restoring the famed lighthouse. It has already put up a fence boundary, protective mats around the perimeter, and "bubble-wrapped" the Lantern Room. Renovations over the next few months will include: the restoring of deteriorated components (such as old metal and support beams); repainting both the interior and exterior; reinforce the stairs; replace windows; install a fire suppression system, and much more.

Pancake Supper at Stack 'Em High

The Outer Banks Women's Club is sponsoring a Pancake Supper at Stack 'Em High in Kill Devil Hills on Wednesday, April 18 from 5:30-7:30PM. The cost is $8 per adult and $5 per child under 6 years. Enjoy a delicious "Breakfast-for-Dinner", including three pancakes (two for children), sausage or bacon, spiced apples, and a beverage. The proceeds go towards club scholarships and community needs through the Outer Banks Women's Club.

Earth Day OBX at Jennette's Pier

Don't miss the very first Earth Day OBX at Jennette's Pier in Nags Head on April 22nd. This event is completely FREE and child friendly, so bring the whole family! There will be at least 25 exhibitors, FREE t-shirts, activities for children (including t-shirt tie-dying!), and speakers on environmental issues. This wonderful event is registered with the Earth Fair Network, an international non-profit group that is collecting pledges for the next UN Climate Negotiations. Earth Day OBX attendees will be able to make pledges via their webpage through available laptops.

Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station Open for Season

Shown above is the "newest" part of the Lifesaving Station... added on just 101 years ago! You can purchase this image on t-shirts at the gift shop.

The Lifesaving Station is now open for the 2012 season. Operating hours are Monday-Friday, from 10AM-5PM. Located in Rodanthe, it is listed on the National Register for Historic Places. Programs and demonstrations are held regularly, so please check the website www.chicamacomico.net for updated information. You can also "Like" the Lifesaving Station on Facebook. This is a must-see while on the Outer Banks!

Outdoors Day on April 11

All ages are invited to the FREE Outdoors Day on April 11 at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in Corolla at the Currituck Heritage Park. Activities will include archery, crabbing, birding, kayaking, fishing and laser shot. The event runs from 10AM-3PM. Be sure to register in advance, however, to ensure that space is available. If you've never been to the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, I'd highly recommend checking it out. They have programs for children and adults of all ages, starting as young as two-years-old!

The Hunt is On! Egg Hunts This Weekend on the OBX

Looking for a good Easter egg hunt for the kids this weekend? There are plenty to be had, on both ends of the beach.

On Saturday, check out the Easter Eggstravaganza at Kitty Hawk Kites at Jockey's Ridge. The Hunt is from 11-1PM at the store. Their Easter Eggstravaganza also coincides with National Kite Month, so you'll also get a chance to check out the large and unusual-shaped kites flying from Jockey's Ridge. Also on Saturday, the Elizabethan Gardens is holding their annual Easter Eggstravaganza as well, with an egg hunt starting at 11:30AM. The Easter Bunny will on hand for photos, and there will be an egg relay race and Easter bonnet contests, too.

On Easter Sunday, stop by the Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg at 2PM for a egg hunt and a visit from the Easter Bunny. While you're there, take advantage of all the great Easter Sunday sales they'll be having!
