Fall Dining on the Outer Banks

Last week my husband and I got a babysitter for the kids--a rare treat!--and headed off in the direction of... our office.  We had planned a night to go in and do our billing.  But only about a block or so away from our house, we deemed the night too pretty to be a billing night and instead decided to head out on a "secret date"!  Eating out without our two little ones is a treasured luxury, so rather than settle for our usual date night haunts, we chose a relatively new restaurant called The Brine and Bottle.  Located on the Causeway on the way to Manteo, it's a little out-of-the-way for us KDH-ers, but without the kids an extra few miles was no big deal.

Tucked into the Caribbean Corners shopping center, The Brine and Bottle felt like a secret destination.  When we got inside, we seemed to know at once that we'd found a hidden gem.  The dining room is small--besides the bar I think there were only three or so tables.  But the smallness of the room added to the intimacy, and I was smitten.  The wine list was unique; most I'd never even heard of, and the menu was eclectic.  The word "brine" in their name is there for a reason-- the specialize in pickling things.  We ordered the Farmer's Plate to split and it included pickled carrots.  I'd never had pickled carrots in my life--in fact, I usually don't like carrots unless they're cooked to mush--but these were divine!  Crunchy and delicious, I almost bought a jar to take home.  Overall I was pleased with our meal and our new find.  It's always fun to discover a new and yummy place to eat right in your own backyard!
