The Outer Banks Post Hurricane Irene
It's been a few days now since Hurricane Irene blew through our beloved beach, and we're drying up, cleaning up, and opening up just as fast as we can to make the best of the last remaining days of summer. Many on the oceanside of the Outer Banks were fortunate to be spared damage, but many with homes on the soundside didn't fare quite as well. The sound rose to record levels--and very quickly--leaving many who thought their homes were out of harm's way underwater.
As has been reported on the news, Hatteras Island is still cut off from the rest of the Outer Banks as the floodwaters washed away parts of NC 12 near the surf break "S" turns. For updated Dare County bulletins on Hurricane Irene, please visit www.co.dare.nc.us. If you are interested in volunteering to help with clean-up efforts or would like to make a donation, call Interfaith Community Outreach at (252) 465-5758 or (252) 275-5759.
On a personal note, I hope that you and yours fared well during the storm. If your vacation was cut a little short by Irene, please come back and see us again soon! If you're starting your vacation late because of the hurricane, we're glad you came. Enjoy this beautiful weather... the beach is always glorious after a storm.
