Hurricane Irene - From a Local's Perspective
There's a lot of chatter right now--at the water coolers, on the news, on Facebook--about the dreaded "H" word: Hurricane. Hurricane Irene, which just passed through Puerto Rico last night, is still hundreds of miles and several days away. In that time, just about anything can happen. We've seen it before, just about every hurricane season to be exact, a storm forms in the tropics and creates a wave of panic through every seaside town from the Florida Keys to Bar Harbor, Maine. Where will it go? What category will it be? Should we evacuate?
The truth of the matter is, we won't know what's going to happen until it gets much closer. More often than not, hurricanes fizzle out or veer off course back into the ocean. Rarely are we directly hit. That's not to say that hurricanes aren't a dangerous force of nature. They most certainly are. And if it looks as if the Outer Banks will be affected, the authorities will issue an evacuation order which should absolutely be heeded. But until then, all we can do is wait, relax and enjoy this beautiful weather!
