Nags Head's 50th Birthday Carnival

When I heard the carnival was coming to town to celebrate the Town of Nags Head's 50th birthday, I knew it was an event that I didn't want to miss.  I wanted my son Sam to ride the rides, see the blinking lights and try his first cotton candy.  As promised, there were actually plenty of rides there for young children.  He rode on the ferris wheel, the boat ride, the caterpillar ride and the giant slide.  And unlike the last carnival I attended twenty years ago, I avoided the stomach-churners like the tilt-a-whirl and anything else that spun, rolled or thrust violently.  The ferris wheel was my hands-down favorite.

But the biggest highlight of all for my son was getting to meet a real police officer.  Sam loves police cars, fire trucks and ambulances.  So when we saw a policeman on-duty at the carnival, he wanted to say hi.  The policeman was so nice; he actually took us to his cruiser and let Sam sit inside and turn on the lights!  Talk about making a 3-year-old's day!  After all of the fun rides, pizza, cotton candy and games, all Sam could talk about was the police car!

A great crowd turned out for the four nights that the carnival was in town--it seemed like a good mix of local folks and tourists.  The night we were there we even saw a bridal party getting their wedding photos taken on the ferris wheel!  Overall, it was a wonderful way to spend an evening with the family; and the Town of Nags Head should be proud of the fun and family-friendly celebration it put on for its residents and visitors.
