Day Trip to Ocracoke

I've just returned from a week long vacation in Ocracoke with my family.  I love that tiny island, so much that I usually try to go there at least once a year.  If you've come all the way to the Outer Banks and you're looking for a wonderful day trip, I highly recommend visiting Ocracoke.

You can still drive on the beaches on Ocracoke.  We drove out on the beach on a few occasions, which always makes a beach day more fun (and easier, too, since you don't have to haul all of your gear over the dunes).

The island is pretty easy to navigate; most shops and restaurants are on the main drag or on the Back Road.  Quaint boutiques filled with local and regional art make for a fun shopping adventure.  My wallet took a beating at the Village Diva (I bought a beautiful teal Hobo clutch!), the Secret Garden (where I picked up a cute necklace and jasmine-scented perfume), and Ride the Wind surf shop (I bought Adam a great trucker hat there).

And you can't beat Ocracoke for fresh seafood.  We watched a mate filet a mahi right on the docks beside a restaurant!  My favorite places to grab a meal are Howards Pub for steamed shrimp and an unparalleled beer selection, both Jolly Roger and SmacNalley's for their great views of Silver Lake, and Dajio for its out-of-this-world Tempura Tuna.

If you plan on going, Simply take NC 12 until it ends at the ferry docks in Hatteras (an hour-ish trip from Kill Devil Hills), and then take the FREE ferry to Ocracoke.  Have fun!
