Beach Safety
Temperatures are in the 80s, the water's warming up and blissful beach days are in the forecast. But even on vacation accidents can happen. It's important to have your wits about you and follow a few basic safety guidelines to make sure that your trip to the Outer Banks is fun, relaxing and injury-free!
RED FLAGS - Stay out of the water when the red flags are flying. Red flags indicate dangerous swimming conditions ranging from rough surf to riptides.
RIPTIDES - If caught in the undertow (or riptide), try not to struggle and wear yourself out by swimming against it. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the riptide. If you cannot swim parallel to the shore, float on your back until you are beyond the pull of the current.
PAY ATTENTION - Keep a watchful eye over small children.
BUDDY SYSTEM - Never swim alone or at night.
FILL IN HOLES - After you're done playing in the sand, fill holes that you might've made with your beach umbrellas or sandcastles. Holes left overnight can be dangerous to other beachgoers or to lifeguards driving ATVs.
GO GLASSLESS - Avoid bringing glass bottles to the beach. Opt for cans or plastic instead. And always, always discard of your trash properly.
See you on the beach!
