Where There's Smoke...

I've been curious about what's been burning across the bridge.  I've seen people post photos on Facebook of a smoke plume and others in Hatteras talk about the smoky smell when the wind blows in the right direction.  Turns out, according to the North Carolina section of The Virginian-Pilot newspaper, it's a fire in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.  By late Friday night, visitor services manager Bonnie Strawser stated that 3,500 acres had been affected.  Firefighters planned to build containment lines on Saturday, but I haven't heard yet whether it has been contained yet or not.  Currently there is a section of road between Engelhard and Stumpy Point closed due to smoke and fire on both sides of the road.
