Take Art Classes & Buy Cool Local Art at ARTspace
I'm a huge fan of local art... not just here but anywhere I happen to go as a tourist. I love picking up interesting sketches, paintings, pottery or jewelry wherever I travel, and I'm sure that there are plenty of other people who do that, too. I also love supporting my community, and local artists are the lifeblood of the Outer Banks. When we buy and display their works, we are in essence supporting our community.
I happened to wander into ARTspace in Kitty Hawk last week and thought it was the perfect sort of place to blog about. In the Southern Shores Crossing Shopping Center, tucked away in the corner, sits two ARTspace units. One is solely a studio for artists and the other is a gallery of their works. Ranging from jewelry to oil paintings to reclaimed and repainted furniture, the shop hosts the work of between 20 and 30 local artisans. Many pieces are very affordable, and I almost walked out with a pretty painted mirror that caught my eye. The shop hosts classes; a popular one --called "Sip and Dip" -- has students bring whatever they'd like to sip and then they get the chance to paint a picture with emerging local artist Katy Caroline. The cost is $35 and includes all art supplies.
ARTspace's winter hours are limited, so visit obxartspace.com to see their updated hours or call 252-261-2787 to sign up for a class.
