Christmas Past at Island Farm
For a glimpse into an 1850s Southern Christmas, visit the Island Farm on Roanoke Island. A living history site, the Island Farm has nearly a dozen buildings such as a farmhouse, reconstructed slave cabin, blacksmith shop, smokehouse and chicken coop that visitors can explore. The farmhouse is the oldest period restoration home on Roanoke Island--on a farm owned by the Etheridge family since 1757--and still has some of the original 19th century furnishings.
