Getting to Know Outer Banks Wildlife
This morning as I was sipping my coffee and reading the Virginian-Pilot newspaper, I came upon a little blurb in the NC Coast section and had to share. As I'm always on the lookout for FREE, fun and family-friendly things to do, I thought this sounded like an adventure I just had to blog about. The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is about 25 minutes west of Manteo, but feels like a lifetime away from our beaches. I grew up in southern Georgia, and the tall pines and earthy smells of the refuge remind me of the backwoods there. True to its name, alligators do inhabit the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Other critters that take up residence there include black bears, red wolves, deer, foxes, bobcats, beavers and more.
To better explore the area, the US Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a FREE 32-person, open-air tram that will tour the refuge twice a week. The 90 minute tour is guided by a knowledgable ranger. On Tuesdays you can take the tour at 9AM, and on Thursdays it's offered at 1:30PM. If you're interested, call 252-987-2394 or 252-475-4180.
