Taking Fido to the Beach - An Abbreviated Guide to Local Leash Laws

With so many pet-friendly homes available, bringing your favorite pooch to the Outer Banks is a no-brainer.  But before you let Spot loose on the beach, remember to check the regulations of the town you're staying in... their leash laws are almost all different.  I've gathered the following information from outerbanks.org to help you and your furry friend follow the letter of the law:

Corolla and Currituck County Mainland: Dogs are allowed on the beaches, but must always be leashed.  They are not allowed in town parks.

Duck: Dogs can play on the beach unleashed; however, the owner must be nearby and watching carefully.

Southern Shores: Dogs are not allowed on the beach from May 15 - September 15.  They must be leashed all other times.

Kitty Hawk: Dogs must be on a leash not exceeding 6 feet.  They can be unleashed as long as they don't disturb other beachgoers and the owner stays within 30 feet of the dog.

Kill Devil Hills: Dogs on the beach in Kill Devil Hills must be leashed at all times.  Dogs are not allowed on the beach between mid-May to mid-September, unless the dog is aiding a handi-capped person.

Nags Head: Dogs are allowed on the beach throughout the year, but must be on a leash no greater than 10 feet.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore: Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round, but must be on a leash no greater than 6 feet.
