No Smoking Law Goes into Effect

As of midnight January 1, smoking will no longer be allowed inside bars and restaurants in the state of North Carolina.  The new no-smoking law went into effect to protect workers and non-smoking diners from the dangers of secondhand smoke.  Anyone who lights up indoors  regardless of the law will face a $50 fine, and establishments can be fined $200 per day.  Visit www.smokefree.nc.gov for more information and for the toll-free number you can call to report violators.

As someone who worked in the restaurant industry for many years, I'm so happy to finally see this law enacted.  I can't count the number of nights I would have to shower after I left work just to get the smell of smoke out of my hair.  The law is a huge step for North Carolina, a state that still counts tobacco as one of its top crops.

We are from the State of Ca. and travel east on business and vacation quite a bit. SOme years ago they past the same law in Ca. banning smoking in public places including bars and was one of the best things that ever happend. Business owners saw no drop in business due to the ban since all were dealing with the same rules. Years later, it's normal and smokers go outside, talk to each other, meet new friends and go back in saving the rest of us. Wa to go NC
