Bodie Island and Ocracoke Island Lighthouses to Go Dark During Renovations

Beginning September 28th, both the Bodie Island Lighthouse and the Ocracoke Island Lighthouse will extinguish their lights as they undergo renovations including extensive cleaning, repainting and electrical work.  Both lighthouses are owned and operated by the National Park Service.  The Bodie Island renovation is expected to take around 18 months, and will be completed in several phases.  The Ocracoke Island Lighthouse renovation is expected to take around four months.  The Coast Guard will issue a "Broadcast Notice to Mariners" to keep boaters aware of the situation.  For more information, contact the National Park Service.  If you've come to see our beautiful lighthouses, please be patient... the repairs are necessary to keep these historic beacons in working order so that boaters can be safe and future generations can enjoy their beauty!
