September, A Local Secret
September on the Outer Banks holds a
special allure for me. During my college years in the mid-1990s, I
spent summers waiting tables at the iconic Quagmires on the Beach Road
in Kill Devil Hills. My local friends always told me that September
was the best month to be on the Outer Banks--the temperatures were
better, the waves were better, the fishing was better, and the roads
and restaurants were less crowded. But come mid-August every year I
had to pack up and leave for school. The summer I finished graduate
school I decided it was high time I experienced a September on the
Outer Banks myself. They were right, and I was hooked. That was
September of 1999. I've been here ever since, and every year I look
forward to September 1, as if it's some sort of mystical day that
reminds me of the beauty and the peacefulness that fall brings and why
I fell in love with the Outer Banks.
And today, as if on cue, just happens to be one of the most beautiful days of the year. Big white billowy clouds, a sweet breeze, and just the right temperature. Ahhh, September.
