#6 The Wright Brothers Monument

No visit to the Outer Banks is complete without a trip to the Wright Brothers Monument. Brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright constructed the first powered plane and flew it successfully right here in beautiful Kill Devil Hills. Today, the site where they toiled is now a national monument. On the grounds, there's a visitor center with exhibits and full scale reproductions; the Centennial Pavilion where visitors can take part in educational programs and see exhibits; and Kill Devil Hill, on top of which stands the famous and oft-photographed monument, the 60 ft. Pylon. Visit nps.gov/wrbr/ for information on scheduled programs, park fees, hours, etc., or call 252-473-2111.
I live within a mile of the Wright Brothers Monument, and always marvel at it when I drive past. I'm proud that these aviation pioneers chose our stretch of beach to make their dreams come true. It reminds me that (with a little fortitude and hard work) anything is possible, if you believe enough in yourself.
