A Taste of the Major Leagues Here on the OBX
I'm always on the hunt for fun, family-friendly activities that won't break the bank. It's not always easy to find an activity that keeps both toddler and adult entertained. But this past Friday night, I'm happy to report, I found just that. Adam, Sam and I attended our first ever Outer Banks Daredevils baseball game. For those who don't know, the Outer Banks Daredevils are part of the Coastal Plain League, a summertime league comprised of 14 teams of the best college players in the southeast. Some of the more famous Coastal Plain League alumni are Kevin Youkilis (of my husband's beloved Red Sox), Justin Verlander, and Ryan Zimmerman. I must admit that we didn't get a chance to see much of the game (chasing a toddler around leaves little time to lounge!), but the time we spent at the ball field was very enjoyable. Now I haven't been to a ball game in years, but I have to say it was the ultimate American, apple-pie experience. Between the warm summer evening, the smell of freshly cut grass and hot dogs on the grill, and the kids with ice cream all over their faces and shirts, I was glad to give Sam his first baseball game experience long before he knows how to hold a bat. But most importantly, Sam got to meet Homer--a blue horse in a baseball uniform that's the Daredevil mascot--and that really knocked his socks off. Of course, he mistakenly called him "Elmo", but in Sam's world that's a big compliment.
If you get the chance, take the kids out to a Daredevils game while you're in town... it's well worth the price of admission. For information on tickets, the Daredevils' schedule, how to get to the ball field, and more, visit www.obxdaredevils.com.
