#10 - Going to the Beach
You're vacationing on the OBX for one reason above all others... to enjoy our gorgeous beaches! Sure, the restaurants are fabulous and the shopping divine, but the number one reason to visit our unique barrier island is to relax on our sandy shores, frolic in the cool water and soak up the sun's warm rays. There are endless ways to fill your beach day... toss around a frisbee or volleyball; catch up on your favorite trashy gossip magazine; surf, bodysurf, kiteboard or kayak; scour the sand for unusual shells, washed up coins or polished pastel beach glass; enjoy a picnic of peanut butter & jelly; build a sandcastle; take a long nap... the list is as long as your imagination.
For my family, the beach is always a time of exploration. Our 19-month old Sam is curious about the crabs that dart in and out of their holes; he loves to sit on my hip as we wade into the water; and he enjoys playing with his sand pail and shovel. Our beach visits aren't as long as they used to be pre-Sam (and I certainly don't get a chance to catnap on the beach anymore!), but I love the beach now more than ever when I go with him. Seeing the beach through his young eyes, and trying to imagine what it must be like to experience it all for the very first time again, makes me feel like a child myself. I'll be bringing him to the beach as much as I can this summer... and I have a feeling I'll enjoy our time there just as much as he will!
