Top 10 FREE Things To Do on the OBX - #9

#9 - Visit the Town of Manteo

Just across the causeway from Nags Head sits the beautiful and historic town of Manteo.  Whether you want to take in a performance of The Lost Colony, visit the lush Elizabethan Gardens or step aboard the Elizabeth II, a replica of one of the 16th century ships that Sir Walter Raleigh first sailed to the New World, there are plenty of fascinating sights to behold.  But many of these, of course, charge admission.  (Although truth be told, the admissions for these attractions are both minimal and  well worth the price!)  This, however, is a blog on FREE things to do.

If FREE is what you're looking for, then Manteo is a great place to go and just... meander.  Chock full of quaint boutiques and galleries, Manteo is the perfect place to look for a one-of-a-kind souvenir.  Many shop owners here are artisans, and you can occasionally catch them throwing pottery or painting right there on site.  Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it on one of the benches on the waterfront, watching boats pull into the slips and pelicans flying overhead.  Take a walk over the wooden bridge to the blooming and beautiful Festival Park, where a nature boardwalk hugs the estuary.

Adam and I took Sam to Manteo this past weekend, and it was an unqualified success.  Between the boats (he's just learning to say the word boat!), a bunny that crossed our path while in The Festival Park (you should've seen his eyes light up), and the puddles that dotted the ground after the previous evening's thunderstorm... well, it was just about all a 19-month old could ask for.  As for Adam and I, we chatted up the shop owners, browsed the galleries, and truly enjoyed our day on the Manteo waterfront.
