#8 - Visit Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

You don't have to be a granola-eating nature-fanatic to enjoy the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.  There's really something here for everyone... pristine beaches, fantastic fishing in both the Atlantic and the Pamlico Sound, fascinating wildlife trails and the best birding on the Outer Banks (there are currently 365 species of birds on their bird list).  Located about 3.5 miles south of the Oregon Inlet Bridge on Highway 12, the Pea Island Visitor Center is the perfect place to start your exploration of the wildlife refuge.  There are two marked trails, the North Pond Wildlife Trail and the Salt Flats Trail, for viewing the wildlife and their surroundings.  For information on the refuge, visit /www.fws.gov/peaisland/.

I love to visit Pea Island's beaches, myself.  Even in the middle of summer you might see only a handful of people from one end to the other. I've found that the beachcombing here is usually much better than the northern beaches.  If you choose to go, pack a lunch and plenty of supplies--you'll want to stay the whole day.  If you plan on walking the trails, bring your sunscreen and bug repellent, folks!  Traipsing through the marsh without either is asking for trouble.
