 #5 - Visit Jockey's Ridge State Park

One of the coolest, most unusual places to see on all of the Outer Banks is Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head.  This "Living Dune" is the tallest natural sand dune on the east coast.  The dune is "living" because it is constantly shifting and changing with the wind. The very first time I saw Jockey's Ridge I was awestruck.  Here I was, on this flat barrier island, and all of a sudden I was driving past a mountain of sand!  My first impression was, "So this is what the Sahara Desert must look like."  Such an amazing sight!

Not just for climbing, the dune can be a great place to fly a kite with the kids, take a hang gliding lesson, or learn about nature.  Take a stroll on the 1.5 mile self-guided "Tracks in the Sand" trail over the dune and along the sound, or walk the 1 mile "Soundside Nature Trail".  Nature lovers will really enjoy watching the magnificent sunset over the ridge.  Pack a lunch and picnic at one of the eight picnic shelters.  For more information on park programs and hours, visit
