#3 FREE Thing to Do on the OBX - Window Shopping
Now I don't want to step on the toes of any retailers who'd rather have me buy than browse, but checking out the new spring loot doesn't do any harm. After all, I might just come back later when I don't have my high-energy toddler in tow! But for today, window shopping will cure my rainy day blues. There are so many unique little shops on the Outer Banks. My favorite places to get lost in a world of window shopping are Scarborough Faire in Duck, and Gallery Row and Tanger Outlet Mall in Nags Head. I love Scarborough Faire because it's a world all its own... eclectic boutiques, a fantastic wine shop, a local bookstore and more all connected by an outdoor walkway under the canopy of leafy trees. Gallery Row in Nags Head is a favorite for me because there are so many cool galleries featuring local art. Tanger Outlet Mall is great for deals on name brands like J. Crew or Nine West, and also has a covered sidewalk with views of the sound for rainy day sightseeing/browsing. There are lots of other fantastic stores here, too, that aren't in large shopping areas. Most of the surf shops, for example, are stand-alone. While you're window shopping, take the time to chat with the salesperson or person at the register. More often than not (and especially in the off-season), you'll find you're talking to the store's owner. I always love that personal touch, and find I'm more likely to go back to those stores later when I'm ready to buy.
