#2 FREE Thing To Do on the OBX - Beachcombing
I love to scavenge the beach, especially after storms. From iridescent shells to delicate beach glass, I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. When I go to the beach with my family, we call it "hunting for treasure". We might not necessarily find a gold doubloon washed ashore from Blackbeard's booty, but we'll undoubtedly find the shell of a horseshoe crab--which is enough to fascinate my toddler, Sam! My personal favorite treasure is beach glass. I've got a jar at home filled with the stuff. Soft blues, washed-out greens, a rare yellow gem of a piece, and a couple of reds that I've collected over the years. This weekend we scoured the empty beaches south of Coquina for treasure. There was no beach glass to be found, but we did happen upon a couple of twisted and gnarled old pieces of driftwood. Good enough--we brought our spoils home and have them proudly displayed on our deck.
One of the best things about beachcombing is that it can be done any time of the year. In fact, I've found some of the coolest things on the beach when no one else was around to spot them first! What's more, the whole family can join in on the "treasure hunt", and it's absolutely FREE!
