Good News, Surfers!
One of the best surf breaks on all of the Outer Banks is a little bend in the road on NC-12, just north of Rodanthe in an area known as Mirlo Beach. Called "S-Turns" by the locals, the waves there are too good to be a "secret spot". On days when the waves are waist-high or bigger, cars line the sides of NC-12 and surfers flip-flop their way over the sea grass and dunes to the ocean. But local property owners haven't been quite as thrilled with the off-road parking, or worse yet, the cars that block their driveways and the surfers that change clothes on the side of the road. In response to this issue, Dare County has proposed a beach access at S-Turns, complete with parking, bathrooms, bike racks and a picnic area next to the road. In addition, they hope to build a gazebo, bathrooms with showers, a volleyball area and maybe even a playground on the ocean side of the access. So far, both surfers and local property owners are pleased with the beach access proposal. For more details, stop by the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Communtiy Building tonight for the public meeting held by the Dare County Parks and Recreation Department.
