My 2009 Outer Banks Resolutions

I'm typically not a believer in New Year's Resolutions.  It seems that almost as soon as they're made, said aloud and sworn never to be broken, that... oops, we slip up and become human again.  Still, year after year, I make small promises to myself... be more active, read more, practice patience, et cetera, et cetera.  This year, I've decided to make a few Outer Banks resolutions, a local twist on our usual New Year's vows.

1. Look at the beach every day.
I know that taking a walk on the beach every day isn't always possible, but at least driving down the Beach Road to get a glimpse of our gorgeous seashore is an easy enough resolution to keep.  It's why we live (or vacation) here.  Sometimes I find myself going days without seeing the ocean... and I live and work less than a few blocks from it!  Such a shame!  My promise in 2009 is to not take this beautiful barrier island for granted.

2. Do my part to make the beach more beautiful.
On my beach walks, my resolution is to bring a bag to pick up any litter I see along the way.  Even though I might not have been the one who left it there, if I don't do something about it then who will?

3. Shop locally.
This is a promise I made to myself over the holidays, and one that was fun and easy to keep.  Shopping locally supports our friends and neighbors.  I will think twice before I drive across the border to Virginia.

4. Try to see the Outer Banks through the eyes of a child.
Having my young son Sam has made me see the world differently.  I get so much pleasure in watching him see or experience something for the first time.  Taking him to the Wright Brothers Monument, watching him play in the sand at Coquina Beach, riding the ferry with him to Ocracoke Island... everything he does is new and magical, and I get to experience that vicariously through him.  What a wonderful way to live life!

Happy 2009 to everyone!

I just wanted you to know that alot of the things you resolved to do in 2009 are on my list too. We are very fortunate to live here and we all should embrace the Outer Banks and the wonderful things it offers.
