Shop Locally This Holiday Season!
It's the weekend before Christmas, and I'm nowhere near finished with my holiday shopping! Just like last year and all of the years before that, I've waited until the final week to buy most of my Christmas presents. What's different about this year is that I've made a promise to myself to shop almost entirely locally. In the past, I've made pilgrimages to Chesapeake's crowded chain stores and malls. I've waited in long lines, fought traffic jams, and grumbled under my breath at the lady who bought the last Wii game in Circuit City. This year, in my own humble attempt to bolster the OBX economy, I'm shopping right here. In fact, my quest for local gifts began less than two miles from my home. Just yesterday morning I went to one of the best places in all of Nags Head to buy gifts--Gallery Row. Each year Adam and I exchange silly Santa tree ornaments with our good friends, and I found one at the Sally Huss Gallery that fit the bill (Santa riding a surfboard in Hawaiian-print board shorts!). At Glenn Eure's Ghost Fleet Gallery I bought a couple of Glenn's sailboat brush and ink drawings. Glenn took the time to draw my mother and father-in-law's names on the sailboats, along with the name of their beach cottage, "Sea Fever." I must admit... I'd never find presents as unique, thoughtful or personal as these in Target or Macy's. And what's more, I feel good contributing in my own small way to our local businesses at Christmastime.
