Manatees in Manteo?

Manteo's Shallowbag Bay had a few unusual visitors this past month--a couple of lost manatees!  The Virginian-Pilot's Sunday paper reported that at least one, but possibly two, manatees had been spotted swimming under the Cora Mae Basnight Bridge in Manteo.  Over the past month several people had reported seeing alligators in Manteo's waters--but most likely they had been seeing these two out-of-place manatees.  According to the Pilot article, manatees usually spend their winters in warm waters and rarely venture north of Florida.  If the manatees stick around much longer, experts from Sea World may come to recover them.  So if you're visiting Manteo this week, pop by the waterfront and see if you can catch a glimpse of our wayward southern friends.  Let's hope they find their way home soon!
