New Beach Blog Writer
Hello, readers! The Beach Blog is changing writers, and I wanted to introduce myself to you all before I began blogging away. My name is Cathy and I'm a longtime resident of the beautiful Outer Banks. My husband Adam, my 1-year-old son Sam, our two labradors Captain and Jackson, and I have great love for this amazing place. I've been a writer for many local publications for about ten years now, and I look forward to sharing on this Beach Blog my love for the Outer Banks, my knowledge of the region, and day-to-day events as they happen. I welcome your comments and suggestions, and hope that you all find this blog as interesting to read as it will be for me to write!

We're arriving Sat 10/18 and we also have a 1 year old. Any suggestions for fun family (age-appropriate) things to do in the off season? Also, is the grocery store rebuilt in Kitty Hawk?

Kelly - The Outer Banks in the off-season is a really fun place to vacation with a 1-year-old! Walking the beach is always fun, as are the fantastic bike paths in Southern Shores and Duck. I like to take my 1-year-old son Sam to Jockey's Ridge in Nags Head to watch the hang gliders and the people flying kites, too. Strolling around downtown Manteo is another fun way to spend an afternoon. You can check out the NC Aquarium, the Roanoke Island Festival Park, and the Elizabethan Gardens--all in Manteo. The week that you're here, you should check out the Stunt Kite Competition or the Haunted Village in Corolla. Check out the calendar section of this website for more info on those events.
As for the grocery store in Kitty Hawk, the new Harris Teeter (formally Seamark) is not yet finished, but the Food Lion across the street is still open.
