Ten Cool Things to do on Your Vacation: Wolf Howlings
Did you know that the Alligator River Wildlife Refuge west of Manteo on mainland Dare County is home to red wolves? This species, which once roamed free throughout the southeast, was on the brink of extinction, but has been through a captive breeding program initiated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Wolves now inhabit the swampy terrain of mainland Dare and Hyde Counties.
The Red Wolf Coalition and the staff of the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge host "wolf howlings" at various times during the year when refuge visitors have the chance of hearing a red wolf in the wild. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. The non-refundable fee is $5.00 per person, kids under 5 are free! The howlings are limited to 70 people, so register early to save your spot.
Meet at the Creef Cut Wildlife Trail on US HWY 64, approximately 5 miles west of Manteo. Programs last approximately 2 hours, and will be canceled in case of bad weather.
Here's the list of dates, all on Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m.
