Tours of the Wright Brothers Memorial Tower Available this Summer
The great gray monolith of the Wright Brothers National Memorial has become an enduring symbol of the Outer Banks. This summer, for the first time in years, visitors are invited to tour the granite tower. Special tours will be held on Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m. from July 1 to Labor Day. Pre-registration is required!!
The trek up the hill to the monument is a strenuous walk, so those with heart or respiratory problems will want to take that into consideration. Kids must be 42 inches tall and must be able to climb the 70 steps to the top of the tower by themselves. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. the Saturday prior to the tour. Call 252-441-7430, ext. 230 to register for the program, which is limited to 30 people. Because the tower steps are very narrow, foot traffic will be limited to one direction. Trips to the top will be limited to 3 people at a time, who will be able to stay on the observation platform at the top for 10 minutes.
