Green Anole
This summer you might hear or even see a green anole scurrying around. These tree-dwelling lizards can be found on the Outer Banks and are often mistaken for chameleons. Indeed, just like a chameleon, the green anole can change its colors and can appear white, gray or yellow. The green anole, which grows to 6 - 8 inches, can be determined by its dewlap, which is a red expandable portion of skin on the underside of its neck. The dewlap is displayed during times of courtship or as a territorial display. The green anole feeds on insects. They have the built in protection mechanism of allowing their tail to break off when captured. A new tail will grow via regeneration.
