New 1908 photos of Wright Brothers and Manteo discovered

After the Wright Brothers made their famous flight in Kitty Hawk in 1903 that brought manned flight to the modern world, they made an additional trip to the Outer Banks in 1908.  On this visit however, they were not alone.  Members of the press from New York, Chicago and London descended upon the area in order that they might catch a photo of the Wrights flying.

One of the photojournalists who came to capture the excitement was James Hare, whose photographs were recently discovered by Dr. Larry Tise, Wilbur and Orville Wright Distinguished Professor of History at East Carolina University.  Tise will give a presentation about his finds, which include many photos of 1908 Manteo that have never before been seen.

The program takes place at the annual membership meeting of the Outer Banks History Center Associates Thursday April 1st at 7:00 p.m. in the film theater at Roanoke Island Festival Park.  The program is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will follow the program.
