It's not a Sand Dollar.....it's a Sand Collar
Recent spring tides have washed up many sand collars along Outer Banks beaches. These interesting finds are the egg cases of moon snails that belong to the family Naticidae. Moon snails are also referred to as sharks eyes because of the eye-like appearance of their shells.
The collars are a mixture of sand, mucous and eggs which are woven together in the shells deep water and wash up after rough seas and high tides.
