Osprey: A sure sign of spring!

One of the most uplifting signs of spring is the arrival of the osprey (Pandion haliaetus).  The medium-sized raptors return to the Outer Banks at the end of February or beginning of March after wintering in Florida or South America.
They are recognized by their white head and underside and dark back.  They are often seen hovering over the ocean or sounds looking for a meal of fresh fish.  If you are lucky you might get to glimpse a flying osprey as it carries a fresh fish back to its nest.

Ospreys nest near the water in dead trees or on top of utility poles.  Their nests are constructed of large sticks and can reach over 5 feet in diameter and weigh hundreds of pounds. Nesting sites are reused year after year and after a sprucing up, the female will lay 2 - 4 eggs.

So keep your eyes open for this wonderful herald of spring!
