U-Boats off the North Carolina Coast
Author and historian Kevin Duffus will speak about the War Zone: World War II off North Carolina's Outer Banks as part of the Dare County Library Foundation's Winter Enrichment Series.
Many people don't know that North Carolina coastal residents were much closer to action during the war than many American soldiers overseas. German U-boats cruised the coast and preyed upon vessels, particularly oil tankers. Old timers recall seeing them burning offshore after receiving a hit from a torpedo.
This is a fascinating aspect of Outer Banks history and Duffus is an educated and entertaining speaker. He will give his presentation at the Kill Devil Hills Library Saturday March 8 at 3:00 p.m. and the Hatteras Branch Library Sunday March 9 at 3:00 p.m.
