The Battle of Roanoke Island

On February 7, 1862 the first major modern amphibious landing took place at Skyco on Roanoke Island when Union troops of the Burnside Expedition disembarked and prepared to battle with Confederate troops entrenched on the island.

On the following day Union soldiers, over 7500 strong, had to wade through swampy terrain to reach the 2500 Confederate troops stationed at the north end of Roanoke Island.  Capturing the island meant control of northeastern North Carolina and back door access to Norfolk.

A particularly sad incident during the battle was the loss of O. Jennings Wise, son of Governor Henry Wise of Virginia.  He was a highly educated gentlemen in the Richmond Light Infantry Blues. It was said he spoke 4 languages.
